    ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik and Roscosmos commander Sergei Ryazansky were launched into space yesterday from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 15:41 GMT (17:41 CEST). Their Soyuz MS-05 spacecraft circled Earth four times to catch up with the International Space Station six hours later and the crew are now settling into their new home and place of work for five months.

    Precision farming is set to become even more precise with a new camera drawing on satellite imaging.  

    Thanks to research with ESA on new cameras, hyperspectral cameras flying on drones are now able to see details as small as 4–5 cm.

    Between 2014 and 2016, ESA’s comet mission Rosetta commanded the world’s attention. Although the most publicly visible moment came in November 2014 with the bumpy landing of Philae onto the surface of the comet, the whole two years at the comet presented unique challenges for the Rosetta team and in particular the Rosetta science operations group who performed the science scheduling of the mission.

    Fifty European teachers took part in 4 days of challenging classroom work at ESA’s Summer Teacher workshop last week!

    The first of two identical workshops organised by ESA for primary and secondary school teachers in 2017, this workshop took place in Leiden, the Netherlands, from 11 to 14 July. The second workshop will be held in October 2017 (all available places have already been allocated).

    More than one hundred students from all over Europe participated in the 2017 European CanSat Competition, organised by the European Space Agency and hosted by ZARM in Bremen with the help of local partners, which took place from 28 June to 2 July.   The winning teams were announced on 1 July.   The  ‘La Burgoneta Espacial’ team from Spain won first prize,  while  Ireland’s ‘Canny Potter’ and Poland’s  ‘CANpernicus’ ranked second and third respectively.
